Thank you,
Make sure to turn your stereo off when you switch your car off because just like the stock stereo, it will not switch itself off and could give you a flat battery.
1: Fiat Punto stereo removal keys to get the stock stereo out - the Punto release keys make the job dead easy. 2: A wiring harness to convert your car's current stereo connection to a standard stereo ISO connector. 3: A Fiat Punto fascia plate. 4: An aerial adaptor. 5: A new head unit. 6: A bit of patience, tea and some cake.
The original Punto stereo is easy to remove - you need the correct stereo removal keys and a bit of patience.
Carefully insert the stereo removal keys taking care not to scratch the bezel. Insert the bottom prong first and slide the key in horizontally.
When the removal keys are fully inserted they will click into place. Using both hands gently lift the stereo out towards you.
Pull the stereo out until you can get to the back of the unit.
Remove the Aerial lead (on the right of the stereo pictures). Pull the plug away from the stereo - it will disconnect and pop off.
Pinch the retaining clips and pull them away from the stereo to remove them.
There are 2 - the blue, green and yellow block and 1 other larger block with 2 clips holding it in place.
Take the Punto's Facia plate and carefully put into place. The fascia plate clips securely into place.
A word of warning here - this particular fascia plate does not generally come out without breaking one of it's grips (It's that securely in place!). Once it's in, it's in for the fascia's lifetime.
Here's the (not so) tricky bit. The Punto doesn't have an accessory signal. Accessory signals tell stereo's and other accessories in cars when to come on and when to switch off.
The PC2-32-4 is a versatile lead and we need to set it up right. Don't worry though - nothing needs to be cut!
When you get it out of the packet it will look like ours shown here.
First of all, take off the elastic band.
The red wire with the bullet connector needs to be disconnected. The long red wire can now be discarded.
Connect the yellow female bullet to the male red bullet.
What we are doing here is ensuring your new stereo receives a signal that it is allowed to be switched on. Because there is no accessory signal we are creating a permenant signal - just like the original stereo had.
Plug in the ISO lead and the aerial adaptor to the corresponding Punto leads.
Fit the stereo cage into the fascia plate.
This is a tight fit - a great thing once its fitted but a bit of a nuisance when fitting! Take your time and carefully ease each side in a little until the cage is in place.
Using a screwdriver carefully bend the teeth of the cage outwards into the fascia plate. This will ensure the cage is secured in position and will not move about.
Bring the new stereo into play - connect the ISO and aerial adaptor leads.
Now is the time to also connect any signal cables, iPod leads etc into the back of your stereo.
Push all of the wiring into the recess behind the stereo.
Carefully slide the stereo back into place. It took a couple of goes arranging the wires so they would stay out of the way when the stereo is pushed back.
Finally attach any extra trim that came with your stereo.
Give yourself a pat of the back for saving money and doing a bit of DIY!
All that needs doing now is to give it a blast - hit the power button and enjoy!
The upgraded stereo looks great and ours had much better features than the standard stereo. We could also play tracks from our iPod and control them from the head unit.
All in all the install was very straight forward and is well worth doing if you want to improve your sound and features.
